      I'm thinking about changing the page titles on my website and wanted to know if it is a good idea to help improve SEO!

      Using a page 'training and engagement' as an example (as is on the dropdown), the page title itself is actually 'Providing the skills to make the change stick.'

      Is that long descriptive title negatively effecting me? Or should I change it to 'Training and Engagement'?

      Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

        Hi @sammecooper, it is definitely a good idea to optimise your page titles to improve SEO. These can have a great impact on SERP ranking as well as CTR.

        Firstly as has been mentioned by others here, it is very important to include your target keyword in the title "Training and Engagement" it is also then good to follow up with a more engaging phrase that will encourage people to click on your page. Something like you have already as a combination of both "Training and Engagement: Providing skills to make the change stick" (don't be scared to use longer titles but keep the URL as short as possible (also including the target keywords)).

        It may also be useful to have a read of this post about stop words that are ignored by search engines https://www.semrush.com/blog/seo-stop-words/

        Other points to test out for increased CTR (which can lead to better ranking in SERP) is to use emotional SEO power words, emoji and even [brackets] in your title. These have been shown to increase CTR in many cases.

        Also worth mentioning this recent update by Google where HTML title tags are being replaced by the H1 of the page for SERP listings https://www.seroundtable.com/semrush-data-titles-google-32004.html

        Good luck with your optimisation, it is an ongoing process so don't give up if you don't see immediate results!

              @sammecooper I'm a huge fan of testing several different Title Tags for each important page.

              The first thing you need to, if you haven't done so already, is to create a keyword map. This map will tell everyone on your team which page is going to be optimized for which keywords.

              Then, you take the most important phrases that have been mapped or assigned to a specific URL and try and figure out how to get them in the title tag while still writing something catchy that someone will click on.

              Don't be afraid to test longer title tags that are even more than 65 characters; just keep in mind that humans will only see and read what's in the first 65 characters when looking at your listing in the SERPs so that part is the most important.

              So change your title tag, wait until Google comes to recrawl the page and the changes have been cached, then check your rankings to see if you moved up or down for all the keywords in the keyword map for that page. If you are on page 1, you can monitor the CTR of that listing in Google Search Console to get an idea if your click through rate moved up or down as well.

              Then every so often test another title tag variation for that page and rinse and repeat until you find the best title tag that results in the best rankings for the mapped keywords with the highest CTR.

                  @sammecooper If you're trying to rank for: Training and Engagement then you likely want to include that in the title tag instead of making it too descriptive. Google does put still quite some value in it. In this case, I'd try to find a way to make it both descriptive as well as enticing to click.

                    Include Site Name in Page Titles or not

                    i would like to ask if it is a good practice or not to Include Site Name in Page Titles. My page is not selling products it is about plagiarism checker tool. i will give one example in one page we are writing about the plagiarism types so the page title is plagiarism types and then is the site name. what is the better practice? Keep it or not? thanks in advance

                    Page Title (Meta descriptions) length... how strict are you?

                    I have just had a conversation with a client... the gist was this... Is it more important to stay under the 55-60 characters OR go over a bit and have the page title make sense and include the clients company name. The same argument for meta description. I have a client insisting on 55-60 length but the keywords are long and if we use the primary keyword phrase the length is 44 if we use the keyword phrase and add the company name it becomes 64. This is with us trimming it a bit. Anyone else discussed this before?

                    How does Google treat Dynamic Titles?

                    Let's say my website can be accessed in only 3 states Colorado, Arizona and Ohio. I want to display different information to each visitor based on where they are located. For this I would also like the title to change based on their location. Not quite sure how Google we treat the title and rank the site.... Any resources you can provide would be helpful. Thanks

                    Mobile Meta Description shorter then Desktop?

                    I'm pretty sure when I counted the mobile meta description in Google, it's a lot shorter then the recommended 165 char for desktop. Is it shorter or am I just seeing things?

                    How long does it take Google to index new title tags and meta descriptions?

                    Hi, I have launched a website ( www.bookkeepingking.com )and would like Google to reflect the latest title tag changes in its results. How long does it typically take to happen? I believe this might be one reason why the site may not be generating any search traffic yet, even though I haven't yet begun any link building yet. A couple of notes: When I enter site:bookkeepingking.com in the search box, the pages show up, but with the old/default title and meta descriptions. I am using the Yoast for SEO plugin I have resubmitted the XML map - Yoast created 2... /page-sitemap.xml and /post-sitemap.xml The changes were made about 1 week ago. WMT says that there are zero errors. Is there something I may have missed? Or do I just need to give it more time? Thanks in advance for your help. Erin

                    Am I cannabalizing my title tags or is there a better way?

                    I've read some info about title tags and meta, and I'm getting a little confused.  If there is a previous discussion that I've missed, please redirect me.  thank you. So I have a locksmith and one of his pages is on Auto Locksmith. For every car, I have a page.  i.e Acura, Audi, BMW etc. Here is my title tag: Acura Car Keys| Ignition Switch Repair| Key Duplication BMW Car Keys| Ignition Switch Repair| Key Duplication Same for the rest of the different car models on the site. I previously asked a question on here about "What is Cannibalization", and after reading the answer, as well as a full article about it, I think I may be potentially cannibalizing my site with these title tags, though my SEO Moz has not indicated that I am. Should my title tags be instead... Acura car keys| Acura Ignition Switch Repair| Acura Key Duplication   for each vehicle page? Additionally, all the Meta Descriptions on each vehicle page read the same as well.  Is this correct? We duplicate Acura car keys, repair ignition switches, extract broken keys, replace remotes, reprogram transponder keys and provide emergency locksmith srvc. Lastly, this is for a city, yet I have not placed the city modifier in my tags nor content.  Somehow it knows what city I'm in because some of my pages are ranking on Page 1, however other pages are ranking like #188, #257...So I'm just confused. Thanks for any help you can provide. Jaye

                    Best meta tite - description writing tool

                    Hi I am in the process of writing meta titles and meta descriptions for a clients product portfolio.  I have the complete list exported from the cms system in to excel. I know I can add some clever logic to build the meta information but for this purpose I want to do this manually.  Does anyone have a editor online or an excel sheet that shows you the charactor limits when writing the titles and descriptions. This would be handy if someone has, otherwise it's a case of having to write the excel sheet to do this, not that hard to do but i thought i'd ask the question.
