Looking for a company or person  willing to work on a small company website in other words not expensive 🙂 I looked on the recommended list on the MOZ website but they mostly in America and mostly only too willing to work on large company websites. There wasn't anything catering for a one-man band business like mine which is letting holiday cottages www.endeavourcottage.co.uk.

I have just started talks with a responsive web designer, but if I got the right SEO company maybe they could do both but not necessary.

Yes it takes time and ability to get exceptional SEO results, however also there are "horses for publications" and lots of small enterprise owners may be concentrated on non-competitive search terms and simply need the fundamentals of SEO accomplished right in place of greater unique and superior talents. like here on flstatewideinsurance website.

          I agree with you both.

Yes it takes time and skill to get great SEO results, but also there are "horses for courses" and many a small business owner may be targeting non competitive search terms and just need the basics of SEO done right rather than more specific and advanced skills.

What you get from one service provider to the next, in terms of skill and results, is sometimes very hard to measure until you've worked with them and found out. I'm a web designer who provides support and hosting and some SEO. I only charge £40 per hour which is a great rate here in the UK for someone of my experience (built and supported websites for HP, NHS, Ministry of Defence and many more). I charge what I think "a fair rate" because I have very low overheads and want to stay busy. So I think you can't always judge quality from a higher price tag ...as those air hockey tables and coffee machines at larger agencies need paying for by somebody!

But I agree, it takes time and experience for some more complex projects which can start to rack up the hours/cost. Especially those wanting results for larger organisations with competitive search terms.

I would agree normally, especially for my company that I work for, but he is a roofer, that doesn't really understands the web, but wants an online presence. As its not a very competitive word in the town we live in, its actually quite easy to rank and doesn't require a lot of effort. The web doesn't actually drive that much business for him, its still mainly the good old word of mouth.

If he was a retailer or large business in a competitive industry I would say £100 is a waste of each others time, but no for him and the company it works. I would say I do more work on the website that the agency does, and I am probably more advance than them - but I don't have the time to do his work and even if I did, there probably isn't really a lot more I can do. They have the local connections in the local press for mentions etc. I only really have them at national level and on large tech blog sites, if I wanted to, I could try and get these connections but for £100 not worth my time.

In terms of the site I manage, £100 - well Moz cost $99 a month, Search metrics is another $x a month etc, but for him and the agency it works. Not all website owners need to spend big to get good RIO - so long as it ranks ok, his still main source of new clients is word of mouth.

Sorry, but when I see " £100 " as a quote on a monthly fee for services my first thought is always that the client should just buy a great bottle of wine and forget all about this.

Fact is in my world that you only get what you pay for - and I know 3 UK SEO firms that at their rock-bottom lowest monthly fee levels are at the least $1000 Euros monthly.

You just cant' get away from it....talent and succcess costs money....sorry to say for all those who're so new to the web that they just don't have a budget at that kind of level.

That said - suddenly I remembered that some SEO firms still do a "pro bono" client a year type of 'pay-back' and that might mean that you'd be 'eligible' to get the SEO work done for free for a year...or some kind of term. Might be worthwhile searching for a UK firm that does that - here in Canada we do it as do many others too!

                Hi

They charge a monthly retainer, I think its around £100 a month, but they are not doing website work - they aren't doing any html / coding work - just basic PR and on site issues.

                  Hi Andy,

Just out of interest... What do you consider suitable rates for UK based small business SEO work? Are we talking about companies charging per hour for their time to implement services or do companies like you mentioned usually try to work up a monthly on-going campaign rate?

I am a web designer and mostly work out my costs by calculating an hourly rate for the time I expect it to take. For web support work and on-site SEO tweaks its an easy calculation but project work requires defining the tasks and estimating the time it will take to perform and them coming up with a total figure.

Just wondering what type of money is "they dont charge alot"?

If you decide not to go with a UK based company or would like another quote for responsive redesign, please let me - cole@pixelbrushstudios.com

Cant be any harm. They do good work, not brilliant but he gets good organic traffic (I do his Analytics for him as well). I should really just do his SEO for him as well, but I don't have that much free time.

Everything is legit and they don't do anything Black Hat or anything. They could do with a better designer so they can do infographics etc, but I probably want what my entire team can do at Ebuyer.com for me, but he doesnt pay too much

They look after my uncles roofing business and do ok, they are not the best but they don't charge a lot (plus I can check what they say for him). While its close I think its too far for them. They like to have weekly / bi weekly face to face meetings, with updates etc.

                            Hello Andy

Doncaster is not faraway I'm in Bradford. but maybe outside their comfort zone. Ultimately I could use a company abroad but it's just that if you ever want to meet in person or to speak on the telephone it's not as easy so all things being equal I'd like a local company possible or person. I do have another website also which is my main business but that's a different subject matter at the moment..

                              Hi Cole
This website http://www.endeavourcottage.co.uk/ represents just a small holiday letting company which started off with my own singular cottage and as grown into 10 properties from people I know. The thing is that because I only take a percentage of the bookings for the other properties my budget i isn't particularly high.I agree it's probably a good idea to use different companies for web design and SEO and as I dabble in both as an amateur I could work with them. The web design company would have to do the on page to the instructions.

My website's been around seven years and I have written lots of articles and got back links coming into the website with a domain authority of 32. For short-term keywords like "Whitby holiday cottages" and "Whitby cottages" it ranking approximately position 10 but I have been a position three in the past. There is another small company called Shoreline cottages ( domain authority 34 ) which manages to maintain position two for these money short till keywords and I'd like to try and compete. I know there's many factors which Google takes into account and they have been around a few years longer than me but if I could find the right company or person may be they could work ongoing for a reasonable fee to expand the results and hopefully the company 🙂

So it's time for a website redesign and to try and find the right person/company to work with for SEO

Depends where you are based, I know a small SEO agency based in Doncaster, Yorkshire http://www.thinkboxseo.co.uk/ but they only deal with Doncaster and the surrounding based area companies. And only deal with small companies

                                  Hello,

It may be helpful to hire two separate companies - one focused on small business SEO and the other focused on small business web design. I've seen people in my local town do this and it turns out well.

I work for a US small company that caters to small business owners in both web design and SEO. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have here.

                                  Thanks,

Can I safely asume that links between subsites on a subdirectories based multisite will be treated as internal links within a single site by Google?

I am building a multisite network based in subdirectories (of the mainsite.com/site1 kind)  where the main site is like a company site, and subsites are focused on brands or projects of that company. There will be links back and forth from the main site and the subsites, as if subsites were just categories or pages within the main site (they are hosted in subfolders of the main domain, after all). Now, Google's John Mueller has said: <<as far="" as="" their="" url="" structure="" is concerned,="" subdirectories="" are="" no="" different="" from="" pages="" and="" subpages="" on="" your="" main="" site.="" google="" will="" do="" its="" best="" to="" identify="" where="" sites="" separate="" using="" but="" the="" is="" same="" for="" a="" single="" site,="" you="" should="" assume="" that="" seo="" purposes,="" network="" be="" treated="" one="">></as> This sounds fine to me, except for the part "Google will do its best to identify where sites are separate", because then, if Google establishes that my multisite structure is actually a collection of different sites, links between subsites and mainsite would be considered backlinks between my own sites, which could be therefore considered a link wheel, that is, a kind of linking structure Google doesn't like. How can I make sure that Google understand my multisite as a unique site? P.S. - The reason I chose this multisite structure, instead of hosting brands in categories of the main site, is that if I use the subdirectories based multisite feature I will be able to map a TLD domain to any of my brands (subsites) whenever I'd choose to give that brand a more distinct profile, as if it really was a different website.

I have been looking into making my website for iphone friendly as my analytics are not great for the iphone and I know when I try to navigate around it on an iphone it can be tough. I was told that if I make changes to the layout that it would affect my layout across everything, which I did not want to do. So I have two questions: Is this correct regarding the layout? If so, if you did something like m.waikoloavacationrentals.com which would be the mobile version how would that possibly effect your rankings with regards to the traffic distribution? Any feedback would be appreciated.  Also if anyone has any experience in doing this I would be interested in discussing further.

Changing from All-in-One SEO to Yoast SEO

I am currently using, and have always used the All-in-One SEO plugin for my website, but I have have heard time and again that the Yoast SEO plugin is superior.  How do I transfer to this plugin instead?  Do I need to deactivate the all in one seo plugin? What happens to all the tags that are already there for the thousands of pages, including the main page, that is functioning from the all in one SEO plugin?

Does anyone know how much a wordpress site can store (in terms of data) I want to put all my movies on it and use it as a personal global external hard drive! Thanks!!

So basically, I have about 500 GB of movies on my computer and I don't want to buy an external hardrive. I don't want to spend the money A website I could access anytime, and anywhere, without having to carry my external with me everywhere I go. Thanks in advance for any help/ references.

I am looking to improve my on page seo, can you provide any recommendations or suggestions for how?

I am relatively new to the world of SEO and recently built a new site.  I have read as many books as I can to help increase my skill set rapidly, and have attempted to implement the best of what I have learned but I know many of you have been in this arena for a while and I would be extremely appreciative of any suggestions you can offer with regard to on page. Thanks in advance. http://luxuryhomehunt.com - home page http://luxuryhomehunt.com/homes-for-sale/orlando.html - city level http://luxuryhomehunt.com/homes-for-sale/orlando/bay-hill.html - community level

                                    Recommended Website Monitoring Tools

Hi, I was wondering what people would recommend for website monitoring (IE is my website working as it should!). I need something that will:
1/. Allow multiple page monitoring not just homepage
                                    2/. Do header status checking
3/. Do page content checking (ie if the page changes massively, or include the word "error") then we have an issue!
4/. Multiple alert possibilities. We currently use www.websitepulse.com and it is a good service that does all the above, however it just seems so overly complex that its hard to understand what is going on, and its complex functionality and features are really a negative in our case. Thanks

SEO Friendly Image Swap Functionality Software

Anyone know of any software for this... I need a simple way to create SEO friendly Image Swap Functionality on multiple product pages of a static site. The idea is that customers can see different images within the product screen by clicking on thumbnails.  For SEO purposes it is essential that: The rollover does not create a new URL when the product images are cycled The image needs to have an alt attribute (a different attribute set by the client for each product) As per: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/tips-and-musthaves-for-your-ecommerce-platform Thanks in advance. Justin
