Hi there, I’m looking for some feedback on a statement made on my Facebook Page re Wordpress and SEO. Please understand I wouldn’t class myself as an expert but I am competent and achieve satisfactory results for clients, more so since becoming a SEOmoz Pro user, I’ve just had some great results for a client using SEOmoz guidelines in ‘On Page SEO Reports’ thank you very much!

A comment however made on my FB page has got my interest….

“as you (kn)no(w) google loves WP and will get listed quicker as 80 to 90% of your SEO is already done”

Does Wordpress (or Joomla for that matter mentioned in the same conversation) have some SEO advantages that Google loves as the poster would have me believe, can I save time and effort working in word press from an SEO point of view?

I use the age old techniques of targeting key phrases and words and distributing them accordingly. Creating internal link structures with ‘key worded anchor text’ etc before embarking on any off page SEO.

Do any of you vastly experienced (in comparison to me) SEO folk have any insight into what this statement refers to?

I did not gather any references to SEO advantages in Wordpress or Joomla in the Enge and Fishkin et al book The Art of SEO, or any of the other books I’ve read, to develop my knowledge on SEO for the benefit of my clients and of course my pocket. J

I think that WordPress does just as nicely in the SERPs as a page posted on some other platform.  I don't suppose that it has any magic bullets that can't be performed on even a hand-built format which includes Dreamweaver. For more details see it on bikes passion and take some detailed guidance.

Wordpress can get very fast once you properly configure a cache plugin. You could even use CloudFlare.com to enjoy some great CDN enhancements for very cheap.

This assumes you have reliable and speedy hosting - a constant of all websites.  It also assumes you are careful about optimizing the images and don't load the page with  megabytes of JS libraries/plugins.

(edit note: In my experience  cloudflare makes a significant impact if you are on a slower, shared hosting plan.  On a pro level host, it isn't as beneficial)

Thank you, you have all answered my question. I note your comment on light weight and fast load times but hear complaints of very slow loading content managed sites including WP, Joomla and others, is this not the case? Or is like any chosen platform where the inexperienced or those with little care can though error create burdens that may slow the site down?

Thank you, the reply above and yours are putting me in the picture, I didn't think there was a magic bullet, 'seo friendly' is a different concept entirely from 80-90% of the work being done for you. Best regards.

I thought this would be the case, but does Wordpress have built in functions to automatically optimise a page?

no .. that statement is lazy.  On-page stuff like heading structure, title, semantic tagging, inner links, etc can be made all easier by wordpress + plugins .. the rest will require work depending on what you're trying to rank for and what your goals are.

If you're the only person in the world selling "evil unicorns" then you will rank on search engines for selling evil unicorns with only putting up a page that says "I sell evil unicorns"

If your market is more competitive, you will need a strategy of content, social, links, etc. to be on top.

Wordpress is only "seo-friendly" not instant SEO.

Out of the box WP handles on-page optimization fairly well especially for the "SEO unaware".  Titles and descriptions are customized from article content and the entire site can be easily index.  The pages tend to be light weight thus load very fast.  From there, it depends on the theme and plugins.

But that is far from 80-90% of SEO.  It isn't even 80-90% of on-page optimization which highly dependent on the content and content category.

As a blanket statement, it is false.  If all they are saying is the sites will be easily indexed, sure.

I think that the more important part of SEO is the selection of topics and categories, the composition of title tags, and the linkage structure of the website.  The most important part is getting quality content and pitching in a way that will make your visitors respond.  Although some might not think that is SEO, it can have a greater impact than a lot of off-page work.

Could you explain a little please? I know a little about SEO but Iess about Wordpress. Are you saying that 80-90% of SEO work regardless of site subject and target audience is done by Wordpress already?

This is probably true if you don't know much about SEO.

that statement should be "....of your **on-page **SEO...." and even that percentage is high for on-page.

no matter what platform you use, you'll still have to do the leg-work of getting quality content, and sufficient natural links ..etc..

Magento 2.1 Multi Store / SEO

This is quite technical but I'm hoping a Magento expert can clear this up for me. Currently my company has two websites on separate Opencart platforms. What I'm doing now is building a Magento website and using the multi store function as well as a few modules to combine the two sites, the aim being that the link juice is shared and I can focus my SEO efforts on the one site instead of two, thus reducing my workload while maintaining the benefits. This is the intended layout: www.domain.com www.domain.com/us I have created a sub-folder (not a subdomain) as this seems to be the best way to share link juice between the new, combined sites (as well as 301s from the old, redundant site). At the moment I have created 2 separate websites, stores and store views (see attached) and have configured it according to the Magento guide, so I know that technically this is correct but I need to make sure that I have done it correctly in relation to SEO. Is the sub-folder set up correctly for instance? Currently the only files to populate that sub-folder are a htaccess, error log and index.php (see attached). Also, is there anything I could be missing in relation to SEO within the parameters of what I am trying to achieve? Additionally, only one store view appears in the "change store view" section of the home page. This is causing me to question if I have set it up correctly, because I had assumed both store views would appear even if they were under different websites (attached). OR do I simply use the same website and create two stores and store views? Do I also need to create a separate database for each website/store/store view? I would very much appreciate if someone could help out here. Thank you. In1Gi7t pyfM03y nUQoMz1

Wordpress Site Structure and H1 Tags

We are working on optimizing a client's website and asked the client's webmaster to change a handful of H1 tags. The webmaster said they could not do to the existing names being pre-set in the design. The website is built in Wordpress. The client has repeating H1 tags due to the 'design'. I have attached a snapshot of the backend. Is there a rule around Wordpress site structure where this doesn't happen? Is it worth changing? If so,what is the best solution. Thank you ahead of time. ylAMvNg.jpg

Best SEO practice - Umbrella brand with several domains

Hi, we have several blogs and comparison sites on specific topics. All the domains rank on top positions in very competitive niche markets. We think that we can get more profit out of the domains when we put them under an umbrella brand. Customers that visit domain A can then also find products easily on domain B.  We see this for example on health.com, with several brands in the top. To maintain or improve our rankings i'm looking for specific information for the link structure. For example, is it better to have the 'about us'/rel=author on each domain, with contributors on that specific domain or is it better to have them all in the (umbrella) brand domain. At the moment we have the structure like this: domainA.com, domainA.com/blog, domainA.com/about-us  and  domainB.com, domainB.com/blog, domainB.com/about-us. I think to maintain the rankings it is best to keep specific content (like blog/ about us) on the domain. So is it the best to just do side wide links with a logo (like health.com) and what about hosting? We work with wordpress, so all domains will be hosted on one ip? when we use the multiple site option of WP? All information on this topic is more than welcome 🙂

I always broken my head to try to follow all pagespeed guidelines. I increase my pagespeed significantly, but i didnt saw any effect in my SEO performance. How is an SEO's time best used?

We have over 50 highly varied and niche sites in our company. Each website is for an annual event spread across the calendar. I am the solo SEO person here and was wondering what your opinions are about what would bring in the greatest SEO power in my limited daily allotment; link building? Keywords? Content? Oh, and to make my life even easier - its all based on SharePoint 2007!

Need an SEO pro to build us a new fine art website

Hey Seomoz friends My friends and I started buying and selling art 5 years ago.  We did it all on ebay.  Two years ago I decided to try an attempt at building us a website to further our business outside of ebay.  www.originalartbroker.com I used homestead.com software aka intuit to do this. I was able to get a lot of first page results in seo after a ton of work and willing to do a lot more.  I'm sure the homestead site slowed my efforts down.  I need more power 🙂 What we do.  We sell fine art.  We are trying to aspire to the leading seller of fine contemporary art online.  We will do whatever it takes to get there.  Our issue is not our product.  Our issue is getting traffic to the site.  I only have 175-200 visitors a day.  I need better results for the keywords of our artists and inquires that surround them.  We have a bounce rate of 70%, average time on site of 1 minute 50 seconds, and a slow loading site that is almost impossible to create individual pages for pieces (mgmt nightmare) Outside of our site we have blogs, squidoo pages, facebook account with 2500 fans, twitter page with 2k followers, youtube channel, and a blog on the site for new arrivals. We have a 200-250 piece on our site at any given time.  We add probably ten pieces on average a week.  We don't need any kind of ecommerce management software as most of our sales are done over the phone being that it is higher end art.  I need a site that out performs my competition.  I need to be in the top three when someone types in "leroy neiman" "peter max"  and so on.  I, with limited knowledge, need to be able to use the software everyday to upload new art as it comes in.  I want every piece to have its own page so that I can also add pieces to a google merchant account.  When I add new pieces under a certain artists and it creates its own page i want it to create h tags and an url extension for each product as I add them based off the discription and artists name.  I would like some sort of blog integration to post our new arrivals as we get them.  I would like some sort of customer capture.  I am thinking something along the lines of them prociding email, name, and zip code to see the prices on the site. You are the seo pro so you know what it takes.  I would like to know what a solution would cost to get us on the ground with more seo power.  A site with speed that is easily indexed.  It doesn't need to have a lot of bells and whistles. Please look at my site and let me know what you think.  You can get an idea from that of what we are doing.  Please give me an idea of what you can do and what it would cost. Thank you
